The ‘64 concert is one of the great records in jazz – here’s Herbie Hancock’s reharm from the start of his solo on Stella by Starlight. George Coleman plays up until bar 9 of the sequence – then this beautiful re-harm kicks in at bar 13. Just top-line and chords here, wih original changes shown above for quick reference, but I think it gets the point across. Enjoy!

Friday’s concert marked the culmination of this year’s Guildhall Jazz Festival, and was a remarkable performance by the wonderful Mark Lockheart. The students played exceptionally well in what Head of Jazz Martin Hathaway describes as “one of the very best GJB concerts” in his 23 tenure at the school. Mark’s music had a major impact on both the audience and performers, with his beautiful ballad, Way of the Road a particular highlight. His music has recently been released on the album Days Like These with the NDR Big Band on Fuzzy Moon records. See marklockheart.co.uk

The jazz festival continued last night with a fantastic concert given by the school’s two vocal groups. During the first half, the Choir performed Malcolm’s transcriptions of Take 6 charts and the Singers presented a variety of material, including a most enjoyable improvised piece. The performance culminated in the performance of Scott Stroman’s Songs of Life and Liberty, a remarkable collection of songs arranged for massed choir and octet. The concert was a great success and the students can now look forward to recording some of that music.
